you win some, you lose some

Ebates is pretty cool when it works. You click on a store link on their site, you get a tracking ticket (to show a history of which stores you've visited), you make a buy, and Ebates gives you a certain percentage back of the total purchase (minus tax and shipping).

There are hits and there are misses with this one. Most of my purchases were credited, but I have 2 that were not credited - so far. The first time, I spent over $100 and got nothing. I emailed ebates but never got a reply. There was a tracking ticket, but really... what good does that do? That was a couple of years ago.

I just made a purchase for $70 and was not credited my percentage. Just when I got my confidence in them back, they screwed me again. I know emailing them would just get me nowhere. So, I'll just try and not get mad.

Other than the above, I've gotten a few checks. They tally your credits annually (I believe it's based on when you joined) and tell you that your check is on its way.

My theory is that when you visit a website to purchase, make sure you're going to buy it the same day. If you add things in the cart and come back (even through ebates) it goes wrong and your purchase does not get credited by ebates. The two incidences above was such a case. I went to the sites through ebates and left items in cart to come back later. When later came and I go through ebates again, the items were there. I purchased. And I get nothing from ebates. Go figure!

Money Back and Coupons!!! A deal and then some!!!

Being disabled and unable to shop in crowded places, shopping on line is a must for me. Finding Ebates.com is like having coupons in the line of a store! Signing up is simple and you have the choice of using a pay pal account or having a check mailed to you every three months. You must have at least $5.01 in your account at the end of the three month period to receive a check.

In the time I have joined Ebates, I have gotten my first check, for $12.43 and right now I have over $40.00 waiting and it is just now into my six weeks of the next quarter.

You can also gain rewards by getting friends to join. While this is one way to "make money" it is not something I do, unless I think that it is something I think someone would "do" or enjoy getting "money back" or use the coupons in. No one likes "junk" mail.

In all, I enjoy going to the Ebates site. I have saved on my new laptop to the clothes that I have purchased. I use it when I am purchasing anything, first checking with them to see if they have the stores I shop with or one similar, where I can save money and get money back.

Rhymes with "rebates," and that rhymes with "free cash." I think

I treat online shopping as a game, and the objective is to get the best deal possible. Now, that isn't always the same thing as "lowest price" - there are other weighted factors that can carry the day, like free shipping, bonus gifts, or a name brand that I trust. In general, though, the cheaper I can get it for, the happier I am.

So when Millinocket introduced me to (well, pimped me out to, but whatever) Ebates.com, I was a little suspicious at first. Why would they want to give me free money? Usually, when people promise you free money for no work, you are about to get ripped off. But Millinocket vouched for it, and it seemed like it was on the up-and-up, so I decided to set up an account.

The basic idea is that you register with the site, and click through to online stores that you would normally shop at. By going through Ebates.com, you'll receive a cash-back rebate ranging from a flat $1 to a percentage of your total purchase (usually 1 to 6 percent, mostly 2 to 4 percent), and checks are issued quarterly, as long as you've earned more than the $5.01 minimum. It is no coincidence that you get a $5.00 bonus for joining.

You have to create a profile with your personal information, including a mailing address so that they can send you your free money. This made me hem and haw at first, but eventually I did it. Once you've created your profile, it gets more fun. Searching through the database, you can find your favorite stores and add them to your list for quick access (you can have up to 50 stores). And they're not just hokey mail-order-steak catalogs or obscure discontinued-computer-parts warehouses, either - I have stores like Target, Old Navy, Sephora, Macy's, Expedia, and iTunes on my favorites list. Yes, stores you've actually heard of and would buy from. Unfortunately, some stores are listed but only offer coupons, no cash back. I don't know why Amazon is even on there, because their "coupons" are just advertisements and you never save any money.

The bummer is that you have to remember to click through Ebates.com every single time in order to get a tracking number for the transaction and get the cash back. Some sites (like Overstock.com) seem to log you in and keep you activated when you return, but to be safe, you should probably go through Ebates every time to create a record. I bought a $200 pair of boots at Zappos and realized belatedly that I could've gotten a decent chunk of change with their 6 percent cash back. Once you've made the purchase, you can't have it retroactively credited to you, though I suppose you could cancel the order, go through Ebates, and re-order it.

I'm guessing that the purpose of Ebates is to lure customers into checking out stores they wouldn't normally shop from. The site's homepage shows daily specials, usually including a few merchants with "daily double" discounts, and if you search for a store that's not listed, they'll suggest similar stores in the hopes that you'll go there instead. Usually I work in reverse - I'll have a store in mind that I know I want to order from, then go to Ebates to see if they're a member, and if they are, only then will I click through and place my order.

In just about a month of membership, I've racked up almost $10 cash back (including that $5 sign-up bonus). The other bummer is that they only cut you a check quarterly - the schedule is posted in their FAQ - so you have to wait a while before you'll get your refund. But if you were planning to buy from a member store anyway, you might as well get your measly few percent cash back, right? I don't consider Ebates a shopping resource to introduce me to new stores, but for stores I already know about and like to shop from, I enjoy getting an extra little discount, however small.

I will continue to use them when ever possible!

Ebates is the first site that actually rewards you with cash back for making purchases through their click through links!!! You don't have to spam or refer people to make money with them. You simply get a different % cash back when you make purchases with one of their over 800 online retailers.

First find the best price with the price comparison sites, then come back and find a matching coupon!
